Prehistoric Hut Circles

Parish Tour Events Clubs Churches P.Council History Services Days Out

There are several prehistoric hut circles within the parish but the most significant group can be found on the east side of Smallacombe Rocks. (overlooking Houndtor - nowhere near Smallacombe!)    This group of huts was a small farm about 3,300 years ago (1,300BC). They are 22 to 30 ft in diameter with double walls which were at least 4ft high.  Fragments of pottery and flint flakes have been found.
The farm probably supported at least 3 fields and traces of the enclosure walls can still be seen.
On the other side of Smallacombe Rocks can be found this stone trough which must have broken just as it was being finished off (I bet the workman was pleased!)
